The final debriefing for the “Joint Project for the treatment of refinery waste (Malaysia)” one of the JCCP technology cooperation projects, was held on February 28, 2025, at the headquarters of PETRONAS at PETRONAS Twin Towers, Malaysia.
This project has been implemented from FY2020 to FY2024 with PETRONAS (Petroliam Nasional Berhad), Malaysia’s national oil company as a counterpart, and with technical cooperation from participating companies Shimizu Corporation and Top Planning JAPAN Co Ltd., Mr. Zamri Japar, Vice President, Group Health, Safety & Environment (GHSE) PETRONAS, Mr. Ahmad Farid B. Yaacob, CEO, Malaysian Refining Company Sdn Bhd (MRCSB), Mr. Masuda, CTO of JCCP, and Ms. Nakano, Manager of Technical cooperation Dept. attended the meeting. Attending from Shimizu Corporation were Mr. Takase, Chief Manager, Dr. Tasaki, Dr. Mark and from Top Planning JAPAN was Dr. Okamura as participating companies in the joint project and about 15 other project-related personnel.
This project focused on the reduction of waste risk and disposal cost thorough carbonizing refinery wastes, especially oil sludges. The results of the carbonization experiments on seven types of oil sludge at the Melaka refinery showed that all of the oil sludges had an oil removal rate of 99% or higher, and that sludges other than those containing large amounts of minerals could be reduced by 9 to 26%.
PETRONAS believes that these results will lead to enhanced value creation in terms of cost savings and reduction of hazardous waste, and the company will look into potential applications of the carbonization technology.
